Bandits abducts 8 residents of Ekiti state

Only a week after four people were kidnapped at Ayebode in Ekiti State’s Ikole Local Government Area, eight people were allegedly kidnapped on Tuesday at Itapaji Ekiti in the same council area.

The kidnappers allegedly contacted the family early on Wednesday and demanded N50 million in ransom.

An eyewitness told journalists in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday that the gunmen besieged a house in the town around 9.30 p.m., shot sporadically into the air, and fled with eight of the building’s occupants.

The residents of the community were said to be terrified by the gunshots that lasted more than an hour.

According to the source, the building’s owner was preparing for his mother’s burial, and the preparations were said to be in full swing when the evil men struck.

“A group of seven men arrived with guns around 9.30 p.m. and surrounded the building.” They sporadically fired gunshots.

“As the house’s occupants emerged, they were grabbed and forced to lie face down.” They were later led into the bush. They were 14 at first, but six of them escaped into the woods.”

“Earlier today (Wednesday), one of the family members received a call from the abductors demanding a ransom of N50 million,” he added.

According to the source, the lack of police stations in the Itapaji-Ayebode and Irele-Oke Ako axis is to blame for the rising number of kidnappings in the area, as the nearest police station is in Ikole, Ekiti, which is more than 40 minutes drive from the troubled areas.

When contacted, Sunday Abutu, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Ekiti Command, confirmed the incident.

“The command is working on that,” Abutu said. Special police operatives and the JTF have already been deployed in that axis to ensure the victims’ safety and the possible arrest of the perpetrators.”
