Gov. Ortom set plans to put an end to manslaughter in Benue state

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom signed an amended law on Community Volunteer Guards enacted in 2000 on Tuesday in an effort to address the state’s security challenges.

While signing the amended law at the New Banquet Hall, Benue Peoples House Makurdi, the governor stated that establishing the State Community Volunteer Guards will aid in combating Benue’s security crisis.

Governor Ortom directed relevant authorities to complete the recruitment of personnel into the volunteer Corps as soon as possible.

Five people from each kindred in the state, ranging in age from 18 to 50 years, will be recruited as members of the Community Volunteer Guards.

While emphasizing that security agents are woefully inadequate and must be supplemented in the fight against insecurity, the Governor stated that traditional rulers would oversee the recruitment of guards because it is a community-based effort.

The Governor bemoaned the kidnapping of six Benue children in Zamfara and their detention by insurgents, saying they were children who had been supported by their parents to obtain an education and were then kidnapped on their way to the mandatory National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

He stated that those who gave their lives for the preservation of Benue land are the true defenders of the Benue Valley, emphasizing that history will remember them forever.

While presenting the amended law for assent, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Benue State, Barrister Michael Gusa, stated that the amendments accommodated a new command structure and allow for the use of permissible arms as defined in the Firearms Act.

Various awards were presented to Governor Samuel Ortom by the Deputy Governor, Engineer Benson Abounu, prior to the start of the State Executive Council meeting, while Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Mrs Ladi-Ajene Isegbe, tendered her resignation to pursue further political ambitions.
