Governor Willie Obiano has stated that the recent killings in the state are linked to politics and are being perpetrated by desperate politicians willing to go to any length to take control of the state.
There have been speculations that IPOB was responsible for the attacks, particularly with the alleged chant of ‘no Biafra, no election’ by the attackers in many incidents. Still, Governor Obiano stated the opposite in an independence day broadcast in Awka.
He stated that the forces behind the attacks intend to scare voters and seize power in the state.
According to Obiano’s broadcast, “we are in a very critical period of our evolution as a free society.” Almost every day, we witness events that put our patience as members of a rational society and our resolve as those charged with providing leadership to our people to the test.
“We are confronted with the sight of evil and a brazen display of callousness that is foreign to our people. We witness our brothers and sisters bleed to death as a result of wounds inflicted by their fellow countrymen. And we are forced to ask, “Who is the enemy?”
“We in Anambra State have just entered a critical juncture. In 37 days, the people of Ndi Anambra will vote on who will be their next governor. The impending election has created a strange desperation among the political class, leading to acts that are not only detrimental to the peace regime that my administration has established in our beloved state for the past eight years, but also a threat to democracy.
“The deliberate attempt to heat up the system and create the appearance of chaos in Anambra State is a desperate political leaders’ ploy to wet the ground and provide a perfect alibi for electoral malpractices.” We are aware of this plot and will fight it with all of our might.”
Obiano stated that Anambra has been the safest state in Nigeria for eight years and that its people will not allow some unscrupulous politicians to turn the state into a theater of crime and absurdity.
He stated, “The negative identity they are attempting to impose on Anambra State will not prevail.” We will stand together to defend our state, our communities, and our democracy.
“Our date with destiny is November 6, 2021, in Ndi Anambra. On that day, we will decide whether to continue our steady march into the Promised Land or return to Egypt. But we should remember that in the last eight years, my team and I have changed the story of Anambra State.”
Obiano listed some of his projects that have put the state in an enviable position, such as “a highly rated International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Nigeria’s largest Convention Center, a brand new Awka City Stadium, three gleaming flyovers, and 18 bridges.” The Golden Tulip Agulu Lake Hotel, a flourishing agricultural revolution, and strong education and health sectors.”
“My administration has laid a formidable foundation for the Anambra of our dreams,” he added. With a stellar performance, we have endeared our great party, the All Progressive Grand Alliance, to Ndi Anambra. As a result, we have no doubt that our citizens will know where to vote on November 6, 2021.
“We all have a role to play in keeping our dear state safe and ensuring that the upcoming election provides Anambra State with a chance to stay on the road to greatness. On November 6, 2021, we have a moral obligation to turn out in large numbers and vote according to our conscience.”
