Hoodlum operating under the name “unknown gunmen” have recently become the new pandemic in Anambra state.

Since the beginning of the year, they have been on a rampage, killing and inflicting severe injury on citizens in different states in the country. Still, this September, the killing in Anambra state has been tripled, that we can’t help but fear for the lives of the Anambra people.

Below is a description of some of the awful incidents that happened in Anambra state this month:


The traditional ruler of Mkpunando in the Anambra East Local Government Area, Igwe Alex Edozieuno, was allegedly killed on September 10th, 2021, by gunmen, along with Ikem Ivife village by Ezu Bridge, Otuocha, Anambra East.

His death sparked controversy as his family created quite an uproar and alleged his death was a political assassination.


In Anambra State, about six gunmen killed three police officers, a tricycle operator and a passer-by around Ukaegbu /Oraifite Street, Awada in Idemili North Local Government Area Anambra State.

The gunmen arrived at the police checkpoint in a white Sienna vehicle, took the Policemen unawares, aimed at and killed their victims immediately on arrival. At the same time, stray bullets hit and killed a tricycle operator and a young man who was probably going for a Sunday worship in a nearby church.


Two unidentified persons were killed in Anambra by suspected unknown gunmen.

The incident, which occurred around 12.30 pm on Tuesday, took place opposite Udoka housing estate in Awka, along Onitsha -Enugu expressway.

An eyewitness who witnessed the incident said the killers drove in a Mercedes 190 car, shot their victims walking on the street, and drove off without taking anything from them.

The victims were said to be businessmen in the area.


The incident happened around 4 pm on the 25TH of September along Igbariam road.

The video circulated on social media showed a dreadlock-carry young man who was dragged out of his car and shot dead at close range by unidentified persons.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Tony Olofu, ordered an investigation on the shooting, but not much was heard after.


Unknown gunmen struck on Sunday, killing three people in Nnobi in Idemili south local government area of Anambra State.

The three victims were set ablaze by the unidentified persons for unknown reasons, it was a black Sunday as fear gripped the people, and the usual busy Sunday movement at Afor Nnobi came to a halt.


Unknown gunmen invaded a meeting of the All progressive congress (APC) in Anambra and shot dead Somadina Oforma, a party member.

The incident occurred at a local office of the APC at Uruagu, Nnewi North Local Government Area of the state. The politician died at the spot while others who were at the meeting sustained injuries.

The gunmen yet-to-be-identified went further and killed three other persons in different locations in the state as they also burnt three vehicles.


A young, newly married man named Olisa, identified by a Facebook user, Dan Ugwu, was reportedly shot and killed by unknown gunmen in the Igbariam area of Anambra State.

Social media was thrown into chaos as the eyewitnesses claimed the killers dragged him out of his car, shot him repeatedly in the heart and left him in a pool of blood.


The incident happened on a residence of students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Igbariam.


Unknown Gunmen raided Eke Nkpor market area of Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State late in the afternoon on Tuesday, September 28th.

According to eyewitnesses, they all wore black jeans and T-shirts holding either a gun or machete. They stormed the area in about two vehicles, including a Venza SUV and killed about six people.

Shop owners and people in the market quickly locked up, running in every direction for safety.

They also beheaded an unidentified man and dropped an inscription saying “no election in Anambra”.


Dr Chike Akunyili, the husband of the late former Minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili, was shot dead by some gunmen on Tuesday evening.

Dr Akunyili was killed alongside his driver and police escort in the presence of his son Obum Akunyili at Umuoji in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State, on Tuesday evening, where he had gone to receive the honour conferred on his late wife, Dora, by the University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA).

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state placed a N20 million bounty on the killers of Dr Chike Akunyili and many others.

Meanwhile, the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has said that they are not unknown gunmen and know nothing about the killing of Akunyili and others in Anambra.

Attack on citizens of Anambra state this September 2021, mainly at Oko, Agulu, Obosi, Nkpor, Nnobi, Nnewi, and other places, have at least left 20 people dead.

The Anambra people have expressed fear about the increase in killing in the state, and they also expressed disappointment that South-East governors seemed not to be doing much to end or reduce the senseless killings.
