The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) characterized the ratification of direct primary for the nomination of candidates for election in all political parties by the APC-led Senate on Tuesday as a retrogressive measure that tries to wipe out all the accomplishments made in our electoral practice since 1999.
Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, said in a statement on Tuesday that the APC-controlled Senate’s decision is a “huge blow” to the development of democratic principles and a scheme to introduce anarchy during internal party elections, which are now possible in the APC.
According to him, the clause is intended to raise the price of nomination procedures, hence handing the processes over to moneybags against Nigerians’ wants and aspirations.
“With the exception of the APC, which intends to use looted cash in future elections, practically any political party will be able to raise the expense of conducting internal elections through a direct primary procedure,” our party asserts.
“This is why Nigerians across the board have shown widespread condemnation of the Senate’s decision,” he remarked.
He went on to say that the party has encouraged the Senate to use its legitimate legislative tools to reverse the direct primary since it is ineffective and does not reflect the wishes and aspirations of the majority of Nigerians.
