Alex Krassyuk, Oleksandr Usyk’s promoter, has confirmed that Anthony Joshua has activated a rematch clause and that a second fight will “definitely happen.”
On Saturday, the 34-year-old dethroned Joshua as heavyweight champion in spectacular fashion.
As a result, Usyk took over the WBO, WBA, IBF, and IBO belts from his British opponent.
It has since been revealed that AJ and Usyk’s pre-fight agreement includes a rematch clause.
After the fight, Joshua was heard saying “see you soon” to Usyk in the locker room, and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, has stated that the two boxers would meet again in early 2022.
Krassyuk now tells Boxing Social, “According to my understanding, and he had already activated the rematch clause because the first thing he said when he came to our corner was ‘we will see again in the rematch.’”
“So he didn’t even consider it as a possibility; it was already a decision.
“I heard at the press conference that Eddie Hearn and AJ himself were thinking about the rematch not just as a fact, but also about the time when it will happen and what AJ needs to change to win, so I believe it will happen.
“Only extraordinary circumstances can change it, but for the time being, it is unavoidable.”
If Usyk defeats Joshua again, he will be vying for the WBC title, which is currently held by Tyson Fury, who fights Deontay Wilder for the third time on October 9.
