Joe Cole, former Chelsea midfielder, believes Arsenal must beat Norwich City during the international break, or Mikel Arteta could lose his job.
Arteta is currently “in the midst of a storm,” according to Cole. Arsenal is now rooted to the bottom of the Premier League standings, having failed to pick a single point or score a goal in their opening three games.
Cole feels that anything less than a win over Norwich on September 11 will be “probably the end” for Arteta, who has lost to Brentford, Chelsea, and Manchester City.
“The future at Arsenal is certainly up in the air,” he told Coral via Metro. I know they’ve played Chelsea and Manchester City, two of the top teams in the world, but it’s the style of both defeats that bothers me.
“They had all pre-season to prepare for the Brentford game, but they messed up on the day because they weren’t mentally prepared.
“Arsenal has had far too many incidents like this. It isn’t Arteta’s fault. It’s been a bit like damp getting into the woodwork at the club.
“It was as though they laid down and died in their two losses against the big guys.
“I admire Arteta’s approach to the matter. You can see that he is hardening as a manager. So, I believe he understands. Because of his work with Pep, he’s clearly a well-trained coach. He’s a thoughtful individual.
“Right now, he’s in the middle of a hurricane. He needs to defeat Norwich, and if he doesn’t, I believe it will be the end of his career.”
Following Arsenal’s 5-0 thrashing against City, Arteta took responsibility for the team’s bad start, admitting that he spends a lot of time thinking about his actions.
He remarked, “I always said, and I’ve been more critical of myself and taking the blame every time we’ve had defeats.”
“I question myself, and I try to surround myself with the appropriate individuals who will look over every decision I make and change it if I believe we should have done things differently.
