Sergio Aguero, Ex Manchester City striker, has explained why he turned down the chance to adopt Lionel Messi’s No.10 shirt after his departure from Barcelona.
It was done out of respect for the 34-year-old player, who is now playing for Paris Saint-Germain.
After leaving Man City on a free transfer at the end of May, the Argentina international signed a two-year contract with Barcelona.
He intended to play alongside Messi, a fellow Argentine, but the Argentine captain moved a few weeks later to join PSG.
As a result, Messi’s coveted No.10 shirt became available, but Aguero, who had the same number at Man City, chose the No.19 shirt for the Catalan club.
He told Twitch streamer Ibai Llanos, “Refusing to wear the number 10 shirt at Barcelona?”
“It wasn’t that I didn’t want to, but I felt obligated to do so out of respect for Messi.”
Due to an injury, he sustained during training, Aguero, Manchester City’s all-time leading scorer, is yet to make his Barcelona debut.
According to the Catalan giants, Messi’s No.10 shirt has also been given to young sensation Ansu Fati.
